Prologue

Her dark brown eyes tickled with tears. She painfully swallowed the lump built in her throat. Having no courage to hold her cry, the silver droplets rolled down through her dark cheeks demanding for justice. “Take this!” The man before her briskly placed his signature on a cheque. Her back stiffened as a chilling shiver ran down through her spine. She couldn’t have expected something better than this from him. “I’m not a pr…pro…” She stammered. He barked with a scornful laugh. “I don’t pay them with five digits!” Her heart leapt. Is this the man she was living with for this long? Hadn’t he vowed to stick with her in good and bad? Leaving a paperweight over the leaf he carelessly clipped his pen in his shirt pocket. She bit her quivering lips. Begging for life from him isn’t going to help her. She had continuously failed to hold him to her charms. He avoided her eyes. Instead he pulled out the coat which carelessly flung on the chair all these time. He walked away from her life slamming the door behind him. She sat on the edge of the sofa burying her face in her palms. Why had her destiny been so cruel? Her shoulders shook gently as she sobbed. She gulped twice trying to swallow the bitterness her life has spat on her face. Her fingers ran over her belly, a fresh life enriched with his blood and genes has begun to grow in her. She had had hope when she held the medical report with positive results. It had been five years of waiting. She had been waiting to announce the prospecting news to her husband. But she had never expected this unexpected storm. No, she had always known that it wasn’t her that he loved. But she had believed that one day he would learn to love her. That’s what at least her mother had been telling. He had come home today after two weeks from a business trip. The surprise gift he had brought home was the announcement of his newly found love and the decision of getting divorced. “I’ve been too kind not to leave you before. There should be a SON to enjoy my wealth,” his voice echoed in her mind. She slammed her ears with her hands as if his words were pouring lava into her ears. How could a night so sweet turn so bitterly sour? Fright swept over her as headlights shone through the front window, casting light on her young face. She waited until everything went dark out side the window, leaving nothing but shadows in her life. Finally realizing that he had gone, leaving her forever with scars, she limped to the table where the cheque was swaying to the gentle wind blew through slightly open windows. Her trembling fingers grasped the leaf; under the dim yellowish glow she stared at the arrogant sign grinning at her. The five digit number dropped down into the bottom of her heart as heavy rocks. He was rich enough to pay her off with a big amount yet she didn’t want a penny from him. She tore the cheque into two, crumpled the parchment and threw it to the bin. She wished she could throw the miseries waiting in her life as same as the unwanted parchment. Her trembling fingers ran over her belly. She shook her head several times not agreeing with the whispers she heard above her head. She watched out the window. Everything was draped with the night cloak hiding its beauty. Just like her beautiful young life draped with agonies she never expected to face. She exhaled the longest sigh as if she was whispering her sorrows to the meadows. One last tear rolled down her cheek, giving her the courage she searched for all through her life. Nobody would believe her story, but she wouldn’t let miseries destroy her. Yes, she wouldn’t let anyone destroy her.

  • Oh my, having a glimpse of Beth after such a long time is really overwhelming even if it's just the prologue. Can't wait to read the whole trilogy and you might remember how a not so patient of a person I am when it comes to waiting for the next chapters. As always, you've done a great job at weaving magic with your words. You might have heard it already and probably don't even need to hear it, but I had to say it. May Allah bless you always, dear dhathi. Keep writing and spreading your awesomeness. <3 With love, nothing but love, Hasna. ;)
